TOTAL CARE -
A conceptual design project for a health care facility located on the upper east
side of Manhattan. Choice of facility type is a senior center for the
treatment of arthritis. The interior space is approximately 10,000 square
feet. The footprint is almost a perfect square; however, there are a
number of irregularly arranged support columns, several sheer walls, a stairwell
leading down to a parking garage, and two elevator bays.

well as schematics, presentation drawings, a model, and detailed
specifications.

The
design intent of Total Care reflects the idea of the community as a family.
The Total Care community is made up of a collection of services that support,
nurture, care for, and tend to the needs of the arthritis patients, just as a
family tends to the needs of each other. The overall network of care
provided by Total Care is to function like a family tree.... a tree of life.
Design
Concept - A small town layout with shop facades and a centralized park with
two symbolic, sturdy 'family trees' that functions as the reception/waiting
area. Corridors branch off from the main reception area and lead to exam
and treatment rooms. There is a cafe with a facade of shrubbery, a
newspaper and mail box. The cafe interior is reminiscent of a 50's soda
shop and will also have an extended covered patio area. The entire space
is inviting and uplifting. Landmarks and visual clues guide patients and
explain areas of service. The overall design conveys thoughtful
consideration of the patient and sends the message that the center is definitely
based on a concept of 'Total Care'.
