HOBOKEN FERRY TERMINAL -
Thesis project selection of the Hoboken-Lackawanna Ferry Terminal
undertaken to resurrect the terminal and transform
it into a sophisticated, urban transportation and retail hub for commuters and
the Hoboken community at large.

October 1999 saw completion of the Hoboken Train Terminal Waiting Room,
restored in the original Beaux Arts style by Beyer Blinder Belle, Architects
& Planners LLP and STV Incorporated for New Jersey Transit. |
Project
Goals and Objectives-
-
Recall the splendor of the
terminal’s historic Beaux-Arts architecture.

Enhance
the current commuting experience for commuters, making use of the existing
ferry terminal facility, adding another mode of transportation to and from
NYC.

Address needs of growing
sophisticated, professional segment of Hoboken community.
Scope of
Project-
Interior:
First Level- Rehabilitation
of two of the six historic ferry slips on the east side of the terminal for
ferry use, and the remaining four slips renovated into useable square footage
for retail and service use. The remaining existing space on the first level of
the terminal to include retail tenant space and public corridors with access to
the second level as well as to train and subway lines in the west wing of the
terminal complex.
Second Level- Provision for
retail and service establishments. Preservation and replication of the existing
terrazzo and mosaic flooring and the decorative ceiling and skylights.
Exterior:
Preservation of the terminal's historic Beaux-Arts architecture.
Addition
of a central grand dome.
Creation of a pier walk and
platform for waterside viewing.
Rebuilding of the clock tower to
replicate the original design.
